Further Information
You supply a photo with the pose you’d like painted/drawn.
-The clearer the photo the better my drawing/painting will be, If you can enlarge to around A4 size and still clearly see hairs etc then it will probably be a good reference photo.
-The best photos tend to be taken outside but not in direct sunlight or have shadows, and taken getting down at eye level to the animal.
-Other reference photos can be helpful in showing detail like eye colour etc. In some of the samples I show of work I have done, you will see the poor photos mean I have less guidance to replicate and the finished portrait isn’t as detailed as some that are crisp and clean.
In my Portrait Gallery (above) you can see some of the reference photos and completed artwork as an indication of what to expect.
Pastel gives much more detail and vibrant colours while watercolour is softer/more subtle with a little less detail. Feel free to request whichever you prefer, or discuss with me for recommendations. Have a look at the Portrait Gallery (above) to see examples.
Normally I leave backgrounds blank on watercolour portraits (sometimes with splashes for effect) to highlight the subject. I do tend to colour the backgrounds in Pastel due to the non white colour of the Pastelmat paper. The highest quality materials are used in the production of your portrait to minimise the impact of UV rays. The considerations listed following should be observed regarding handling, framing and display :
-Don’t hang the artwork in direct sunlight. Over time this can lead to slight discolouration. (Talk to your framing specialist for possible glass types to assist if this is unavoidable.)
-Framing consideration, only use acid free mats.
-Try not to hang in moist humid locations, such as bathrooms and powder rooms.
-Try to avoid handling your portrait as oil transfers from the hands.
-Keep in the protective packaging until framed to avoid damage
– Be aware that Pastel is a chalky media and portraits are not sealed. It isn’t recommended to seal Pastel, as the colour and vibrancy changes when the sealing liquid reacts. It’s therefore more important to be careful when handling as you can smudge the artwork.
-Framing Pastel artworks behind glass provides all the protection your artwork requires.
****Please be aware**** All Portraits are supplied UNFRAMED, framing is a personal thing involving style and location to be hung. Portraits will be shipped with an acid free matting and provided with a certificate of authenticity.
When Framing a Pastel portrait it is recommended that the portrait be mounted in the frame with a Matt surround. This has the physical benefit of causing an air gap between the portrait and the glass. If a matting is not used the portrait is sandwiched hard against the glass. Due to environmental conditions this can cause the pastel or watercolour media to stick to the glass. This is why the air gap is highly recommended.
The sizes referred to are the size of art paper I will be drawing/painting on.
Therefore It should be remembered that the portrait size purchased will have a display size of the size purchased, eg. A4 and it will be supplied with a mat with an A4 opening and therefore require a larger frame size. See the Golden retriever pastel portrait in the Portrait Gallery . You will see it has a white mat and the opening for the artwork is A4 size.
